These clay sculptures explore the human condition through animal subjects and allusions to old stories. Working with clay is a process of carving form from the formless; likewise, after being fired, every form is covered with a dark base—and then layers and layers of dry brushed paint are added, slowly illuminating the figure out of darkness.

Sheep Series

The Sheep Series explores the nature of humankind. Each figure’s internal struggle is expressed by the surface quality of the clay: the tactile scratchiness, the weathering, the evidence of struggle - cold monuments of the artist’s imperfect hands. These figures, these lost sheep, dance the line between despair and longing.
